The Art Marathon Festival has wrapped up for another year, and the people at the Eastern Edge Gallery would like to extend our gratitude to all of those sponsors and volunteers who helped make this event possible. From the kids’ workshops and community barbecues to special performance nights and the 24 HAM itself, the programming this year reached out to a broad range of people and was embraced with enthusiasm. Some of the highlights this year included: Alicia Grant’s dance performance at the Cochrane Street United Church, which brought the “audience” out of their seats and into the creative process; the Fancy Artist Talks, where local and visiting artists not only talked about their work, but had their own cocktails designed for attendees to enjoy; late-night “video painting” by New York-based media collective SWEATSHOPPE, who revealed moving images with paint rollers in the Fortis properties parking lot to the wonderment of over a hundred people who gathered to watch; the mob of children dancing in the Wonderbolt Circus space during the Kids’ Video Dance Party; and Lalie Douglas’ installation $tore, which invited “customers” to take her art and in some cases eat it! On the final weekend, the Eastern Edge was buzzing with activity as several dozen artist created original works on-site during the 24 HAM and revelers danced the night away to a line-up of first-rate bands, including Toronto-based Diamond Rings.

A selection of photos from this year has been posted on our festival blog, and can be accessed by clicking here. And this is a list of people we would like to thank:

The 24 Hour Art Marathon component of the Festival has arrived! Here is the line-up:

24 HAM | SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY AUG 21-22 | NOON-NOON

Beginning on Saturday at noon and continuing all night long until noon Sunday, several dozen artists will be on-site at the Eastern Edge creating original works, including sculptures, prints, paintings, drawings, embroidery, and even body painting. People attending the Marathon can watch the creativity unfold, participate in one of the ongoing interactive installations, or take-in the many bands that will be playing music through the night as part of the celebrations. It is guaranteed that you will see things you have never seen before!

LALIE DOUGLAS (QC) $TORE | SAT AUG 21 | 12-5PM

Art – it’s not just for artists anymore! Through simple kits, Lalie Douglas provides the objects, materials and step by step instructions for you to carry out your own versions of her performances and public intervention projects. Lalie will be on hand to explain the kits and do demonstrations of the different performances.

Montreal artist Lalie Douglas creates objects, installations and performances which question our expectations of how art should behave both inside the gallery and outside in public spaces. She has exhibited in Quebec and internationally and holds an MFA from Concordia University.

PASHA MALLA AND STEFANIE BRUCE (ON) COME IN, GO AWAY | SAT AUG 21 | 12-8PM

Come visit CFAs Pasha Malla and Stefanie Bruce in their impromptu living room in the Eastern Edge parking lot and go away with a free painting — all they ask is for a good story in return. Participants will eventually also receive free copies of a chapbook that compiles the day’s stories and images together. Their practice combines found object construction, painting, drawing, collage, archival research, conversation, narrative text and documentation to explore ideas of comfort, nostalgia, community, loneliness, death, and, particularly, time.

Stefanie Bruce, a graduate of NSCAD’s Fine Arts Program, has most recently shown work at the Halifax Public Archives and St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York. Pasha Malla is the author of The Withdrawal Method, a Globe and Mail “Best Book” of 2008 and winner of the Trillium Book Award.

Bannerman Park

Heidi Wagner will wrap trees at Bannerman Park during the 24HAM Festival with textiles made of traditional and non traditional materials. Everyone can help and are invited to install pieces as well. She provides approximate sizes of trees if people want to make their pieces in advance and then come install. She will be present installing in Bannerman Park from 1-2pm every day.

Heidi Wagner really likes working with textiles; it gives her great pleasure to create innovative fabrics mixed with other mediums such as acrylic paint, pencil, charcoal, and found objects. She tends to develop strong pieces that can lean towards fragility or express sensuality. She enjoys trying new techniques and finding different ways to sculpt with textiles, to create new tactile forms; making objects from thread alone, or sculpting with seaweed is more than satisfying. It is pleasurable to all senses, challenging, thoughtful, considered, and truly exciting. She has always been sensitive and aware of the practice of art from a very early age. It has infinite possibilities of capturing and expressing through images and colours of any medium you choose. It provides a certain quality of conversation and ideas that allows you to communicate without any of these words. It is what she loves to do.

LATE NIGHT MUSIC AT THE ROSE & THISTLE | 11PM

Rose & Thistle (208 Water Street)

$10 Admission

Join us for a night of local music! Ben Rigby is of the many hungry, but happy, musicians in St. John’s, bringing the unique sound of the banjo to the forefront of the local music scene. With mountainous lands of inspiration and a total lack of regard for songwriting conventions, the banjo becomes a compelling voice of its own in his hands. Following Ben are the Cold River Choir, composed of Gavin Simms, Evan Brennan, James Parsons, Stephen Rossiter, and Sam MacKenzie. More of a gang of moody fellows making dramatic folk music than a choir, these boys are not to be missed.

Yet, what if there was a moment in his aesthetic development when he explored other possibilities? Henry Adam Svec’s performances blend a variety of forms, including the academic lecture, singer/songwriter stage banter, and folk music.

After Henry Svec’s performance open your ears to local troubadours Matthew Hornell and the Diamond Minds. This group is gaining momentum intently and tenaciously. In a short amount of time, they’ve fostered a loyal following eager to move to their relentless offering of raw energy and euphonious melodies. The Diamond Minds are Matthew Hornell, John Bungay, Paddy Bryne, and Joshua Bourden.

During the festival, SWEATSHOPPE, will paint live video collages, layering videos on top of another creating constantly evolving compositions and narration. Sponsored by BALLISTIC SKATE & SNOW and FORTIS PROPERTIES.

SWEATSHOPPE is a new multimedia art collective that works at the intersection of art, music and technology. Whether it be as a dance driven electronic music performance that emphasizes 3D visuals, the development of interactive installations, or the fabrication of guerrilla technologies to augment public space, the duo strives towards an element of pop accessibility that is so often ignored in the technocentric world of experimental media. Website: www.sweatshoppe.org

HEIDI WAGNER (NL) TREE COZY | ONGOING SUN TO SAT AUG 15-21
